抄録・内容(英) | The purpose of this paper is to clarify the characteristics of Dewey's theory on “recitation” in his Chicago Period (1896-1904) from his viewpoint of "type of learning.” Dewey discriminated the three types of learning as follows. Type 1 is when one learns without any purpose or intention of doing so; Type 2 is when there is definitely before a person a problem to be solved—i.e., an intellectual end to be reached; Type 3, which is a perversion or distortion of Type 2, arises when one is conscious of the fact that he is learning. It is found, through examining these three types of learning, that Dewey’s theory of recitation highlights the problem with the concepts of recitation in both the "old way (old education)” and “new way (new education).” In other words, both concepts miss the points that the type or phase of learning changed from Type 1 to Type 2 in the process of children's growth and that there is a common characteristic, "inquiring attitude,” in this transition of learning. Dewey's reconsideration of recitation, in addition, includes the point of view needed for school teachers. This viewpoint, which he called “reconciliation,” is that of combining both the natural points of view of the child and the perspective of science or highly specialized knowledge. |
